- The independent nonprofit corporation, known as Eskaton, had its beginnings in the 1960s when several members of the Disciples of Christ Church in Oakland formed a charitable organization to provide health care, housing and other services to seniors and families. The new organization's name, Eskaton, was drawn from the Greek language and interpreted to mean the "beginning of a new age".
