Emit hCalendar microformat for tech portals

OurWork Edit-chalk-10bo12.png

What (summary)

Annotate technology portal calendar entries with microformat data to facilitate scraping by calendar aggregators such as the open source Portland Caligator. The hCalendar microformat surrounds human readable calendar events with machine readable tags. This task is to either find an existing Mediawiki plug-in for hCalendar and conform to it, or, to create a custom mediawiki plugin that interprets our preferred format.

See hCalendar specification.

Why this is important

This has been requested by a portal sponsor. It also seems consistent with our community goals to make our data available.

DoneDone

  • All single day events for PortlandTech are properly coded, this code is recognized, and acceptable microformat annotations appear in the generated html.
  • The template for new events is adjusted to suggest suitably formatted events.
  • The Caligator project can scrape our single day, non-repeating events.

Steps to get to DoneDone

  • find out how caligator (or any other site) would traverse our page-per-day format. Produce a summary for all days format if necesary.
