- I would like to take this opportunity to tell you about myself, my vision for Central Floridians, and why I want to be your State Representative for District 36. My father was a Captain in the Navy, who served his country in World War II, the Korean War, and the War in Vietnam, where he won the Bronze Star. We moved from military town to military town, until my father retired from the Navy and worked as a ship pilot in the Panama Canal Zone. In 1984, after my graduation from high school, my family relocated permanently to Orlando. My parents believed in the basic bargain of America: if you work hard and meet your responsibilities, you can better yourself and your family. I worked my way through college and law school. I worked at Walt Disney World as a cook, a dishwasher, a busboy and even as a parade performer in the Electric Light Parade. I worked on International Drive as a waiter at Bennigan's, a T-shirt salesman at a surf shop, and at Sea World as a guest attendant and warehouseman. In law school, I worked in the law library, as a research clerk for a professor and a law clerk for a local law firm. I have worked for everything I earned - then and now, After law school, I met my wife of ten years, Suzanne Baker Self. Suzanne's father and mother graduated from Edgewater High School and her grandparents live near Leu Gardens in a home built by her great grandfather in the 1950's. We have four daughters: Grace, Harper, Brooke, and Emerson. My wife and I have been involved parents at Princeton Elementary School for several years. We have deep roots in this community. We need to make education Florida's number one priority. The legislature needs to support the lower class size initiative approved by the voters. We need to improve and expand school construction, so our buildings last longer and can be used as shelters and safe havens during natural disasters, such as hurricanes. We need to pay our teachers better. They are worth it. As a former prosecutor, I saw firsthand the daily effect of good laws and bad laws. I know I can write better laws for all Floridians. One of my top priorities will be to protect our children from sexual predators. Everyone in the judicial system knows that sex offenders do not become rehabilitated, therefore, we must put them behind bars -- period. We need to ensure that all Floridians have access to affordable health care. We must protect our state's most vulnerable citizens, seniors and children, so that they do not have to choose between food on the table and the medicine they need. As the son of a military man, I know the meaning of sacrifice. As the father of four, I know the meaning of hope. And as a devoted husband, I am reminded every day what is important in this world. When elected, I won't lose my way, or the sense of who I am or who I represent. Yes, we can do better!
