Title

Michigan Dyslexia Institute

Description

MDI was founded in 1982 as a nonprofit educational organization by Kay M. Howell, M.A., F/AOGPE and John C. Howell, Ph.D., F/AOGPE to serve children and adults with dyslexia

throughout Michigan. Using the training and language evaluation programs developed by John, MDI has emerged as a unique resource and significant educational force in the state. It has attracted national attention and has served as a model for other states. To meet the demand for services, information, and consultation from groups and individuals in other states, the Dyslexia Association of America (DAA) was developed in 1994.

The Michigan Dyslexia Institute is unique in being the only nonprofit educational organization focusing expressly on needs relating to children and adults with dyslexia throughout Michigan. During its existence, MDI has taught thousands of children and adults, helped their families understand dyslexia, trained teachers how best to teach dyslexic students to read and write, and increased public and professional awareness and understanding of dyslexia and what to do about it.
