Title

Diabetes Youth Services Juvenile Diabetes Support Program; Toledo, OH

Description

ype I, or juvenile diabetes, is one of the most common chronic diseases among children, with over 1000 children in the Toledo Area that have the disease. These youths face daily insulin injections, frequent fingerstick blood sugar tests, adhering to a scheduled diet, and the knowledge that a low blood sugar reaction can occur anywhere, at any time.

Diabetes is an incurable, chronic disease that is characterized by the body's inability to metabolize foods properly, causing high sugar levels in the bloodstream. If blood sugar isn't well controlled over time the small blood vessels in parts of the body are damaged, and the areas supplied (heart, limbs, eyes, kidneys) can also be damaged. Over 18 million people in the United States have the disease, with 10% of those being young people with Type I or more commonly known as juvenile diabetes. It is estimated that over 3,000 children in Northwest Ohio and Southern Michigan have Type I diabetes.

Based in Toledo, Ohio, the DYS is an independent nonprofit organization that provides educational and supportive services for young people with diabetes, their families, schools, and communities. We provide these services throughout Northwest Ohio and Southern Michigan. Although we work in cooperation with all area hospitals, health care providers, the American Diabetes Association, Julvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, and the Southeastern Michigan Diabetes Outreach Network (SEMDON), the DYS does not receive funding from the American Diabetes Association, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, United Way, or any other public agency. DYS services are sustained through the generous support of individuals and corporate and community charitable contributions. All programs are staffed by experienced pediatric diabetes educators and provided at low cost or free. Click to go to the DYS Fact Sheet. (PDF format) View the DYS Video (currently unavailable)
