In 1980, the Drake Institute of Behavioral Medicine and Medical Associates was originally founded to treat stress-related disorders and diseases. Since that time, we have treated over 4000 patients with a variety of stress disorders / diseases, such as: high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, migraine headaches, ulcers, colitis, post-traumatic stress disorder, phobias, anxiety, depression, panic attacks, insomnia and substance abuse. We have also had success with disorders or diseases which are not necessarily caused by stress, but can be exacerbated by it, such as: rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, cancer, multiple sclerosis, diabetes, emphysema, epilepsy, Epstein-Barr virus infections, chronic pain, tinnitus and many others. The majority more than 80% of all our stress patients have reversed or significantly decreased their symptoms and discomfort. Most patients who have come to us taking prescription drugs have been medication-free by the end of treatment.
Early in our history, in 1983, the Institute completed a two-year study for the Los Angeles Police Department wherein we treated various officers and police chiefs suffering from stress disorders. As we all know, police officers encounter extreme stress which affects their behavior and damages their health. For us, these men and women have become models from which to gather a wealth of information about the harmful, yet reversible, by-products of stress.
Our most recent advancement has been in the area of cutting edge, brain wave neurofeedback. This breakthrough technology has been especially exciting for us in that it allows us, through computers, to actually see and monitor how the human brain works. This has brought a whole new dimension to all our treatment processes, in particular revolutionizing the way in which ADD/ADHD, Learning Disorders, and Autism Spectrum Disorders can be helped. It has enabled us to develop a highly effective, comprehensive non-drug treatment program for ADD/ADHD, Learning Disorders, and Autism Spectrum Disorders that has benefited over 9000 children, adolescents and adult patients at the Drake Institute.
