Description

Coated paper: It is mostly used for commercial printing like brochures, catalogs, postcards... and it comes in a coated gloss finish and coated dull or matte finish. The dull coated or matte coated has a matte surface and the coating keeps the ink from being absorbed too much into the paper resulting in a more vibrant image and snappy colors. Although the matte coated paper has a matte surface, the ink can create a slight shine or gloss on it when printed.

Uncoated paper: Used mostly for stationery, letterheads, envelopes and some newsletters which is laser printer compatible. Uncoated paper has a rougher surface allowing writing with a pen or pencil, that's why most postcards are printed on coated one side paper (C1S) making the front glossy and the back uncoated to write address or put through a laser printer. Ink looks more flat and dull on uncoated paper versus coated.

Thickness: Paper comes in different thicknesses and there are basically 2 kinds to be aware of, the book stock and the cover stock.
