Description
Door County is part of a Wisconsin peninsula that extends between the waters of Green Bay and Lake Michigan, 60 miles long from its southern boundary to Gills Rock. It is about 230 miles north of Chicago and 145 miles north of Milwaukee. The county has many quaint shoreline villages and quiet harbors. The interior of the county has picturesque roads winding through perfectly groomed farms and orchards. Wild flowers, stone-fenced fields, tree-lined bluffs and 10 historic lighthouses provide interesting focal points to the visitor who is never more than 10 minutes from the water. The county's 250 miles of shoreline feature clean, uncrowded sandy beaches, limestone cliffs and rocky shores. Yacht harbors abound with many yachts that were built in Sturgeon Bay. Scuba divers can explore the depths of Death's Door Passage where, in the late 1800's, hundreds of cargo vessels sank in the turbulent waters. Five state parks, more than a dozen county parks, and the Midwest's largest private wildflower preserve, protect the natural pristine beauty of the area.
Door county is a place for everyone of all ages. Recreational activities include swimming, boating, water skiing, fishing, scuba diving, hiking, biking, cherry and apple picking, golf, tennis, and horseback riding. Homegrown fruits and vegetables are in abundance, and available at roadside stands throughout the county. Many restaurants feature fish boils. Antique shows and art galleries abound.
There are historic and maritime museums that feature the history of Door County's shipbuilding industry, and art museums that feature the works of well-known Midwestern artists. Village festivals are held every weekend in the spring and fall. Throughout summer, there are lighthouse tours, art and dance classes, live musical and theater performances. Peninsula Players, America's oldest professional resident summer theater, is in Fish Creek. This village is also host to the annual Peninsula Music Festival held in August. Door County is a mecca for artists, musicians and actors.
