For every 1,000 children, 8 are born with heart problems (Congenital Heart Diseases), 2 in later age suffer from heart diseases, such as Rheumatic Heart Disease. Every year, in Thailand, approximately one million children are born. Of these, 8,000 are born with heart problems and 20,000 school children suffer from Rheumatic Disease
Children with heart diseases can be saved. Surgical treatments can be given only if patients are brought to cardiac centers. The fact that poverty bars parents from bringing their children to the cardiac centers having to leave their small daily income, led to the establishment of THE CARDIAC CHILDREN FOUNDATION OF THAILAND UNDER THE ROYAL PATRONAGE OF H.R.H. PRINCESS GALYANIVADHANA KROM LUANG NARADHIWAS RAJANAGARINDRA
THE FOUNDATION was founded in 1981 and came under Her Royal Highness’s Patronage in 1984. One of its main objective is to relieve the distress of needy cardiac children from the poor family, most of whom are from rural areas where no established cardiac centers are available. Although large government hospitals provide medical treatment at almost free of charge, there are obstacles which prevent these cardiac children from the full course of treatments. Parents are not able to afford transportation and accommodation (pre-hospital admission) expenses. Some of them are unable to afford even to leave their small daily earnings to bring their children to Bangkok. This is the major concern of the pediatric cardiologists.
