- Homoerotic and homophobic, right wing and left wing, semi-historical and completely fictitious, super serious and just as ridiculous, 300 is a pretty rollicking good time at the movies as long as you don’t take it too seriously. It’s kind of like that cave in Empire: whatever you take into it is what it will give you back. The fight choreography/photography alone is worth the price of admission, as is the site of all those glistening bodies, both male and female, that grace the screen — you know, if you like that sort of thing. While nowhere near a great movie, it’s yards better than the previous piece of Miller filmography, Sin City, though it suffers from some of the same problems in its fealty to the source material — especially in terms of the overwrought voiceover. But it’s much more of a movie this time and much less rings false — except for the parts that are supposed to — with the exception of the character of Ephialtes, on whom the makeup looked hardly better than that of the Toxic Avenger, all plasticy and whatnot.
