Description

Devil Pups is an non-profit organization designed to help boys and girls from all backgrounds gain self-confidence and learn to take responsibility for their actions. Devil Pups is not a Marine Corps sponsored program. The program is not a “mini boot camp” para-military or recruiting organization for the Marine Corps. Encampment Commanders are employees of Devil Pups, Inc.

At a camp comprising 10 days of challenge, teamwork, discipline and education, boys and girls between the ages of 14 and 17 learn cooperation and respect for the dignity of others, regardless of race, creed, color or national origin.

Activities during the 10 day program include conditioning exercises, first aid instruction, leadership classes, organized recreation, a bivouac (camping out) and swimming. About 85 percent of non-swimmers learn to swim. Also, the Pups attend educational lectures on the importance of self-confidence, teamwork, drug and alcohol abuse and the importance of goals in life.

A Devil Pup gains insight into the principles on which the United States was founded, thus enhancing pride in his or her country and its flag. A Devil Pup learns how to be a better citizen and at the same time gains a greater measure of his or her own self-worth.

The Devil Pups Program is a demanding physical and academic good citizenship program for young teenagers. It is important to mention that the program is more mental than physical; reflecting the “whole person” concept. The program foundations are intellectual, spiritual, social and physical.

Devil Pups, Incorporated is recognized by the state and federal government as a non-profit charitable organization under Internal Revenue Code Section 501(c)(3). All funding is derived from contributions by individuals, civic groups, corporations and foundations. Therefore, we must rely upon the support of people concerned with the healthy development of our youth. Devil Pups from California have all the costs of food, lodging and travel paid for by Devil Pups, Inc. Devil Pups in Arizona, and Nevada have their expenses paid by their local sponsoring organizations. Individuals are never required to pay for the Devil Pup experience, but parents may make donations if they desire. The entire Devil Pups Citizenship Program is accomplished at no cost to the government.

Additional Information

n 1953, retired Marine Corps Colonel Duncan Shaw, Sr., learned that a group of teenagers burned an American flag at a Southern California high school. Aggravated by this activity and the attitudes among American youth it represented, Colonel Shaw and a group of retired Marine Corps Reserve Officers, now prominent Southern California businessmen, asked the Commandant of the Marine Corps to help with a community benefit project that would aid the development of character qualities in teenage boys and girls, and enable them to become healthier and more successful young citizens.

The idea was to bring these youngsters down to Camp Pendleton Marine Base and let them observe how Marines are trained and then for ten days be trained themselves by volunteer Marine escorts.

The Commandant agreed that the Marine Corps would cooperate if this group of former Marines would form a charitable corporation to solicit contributions needed for food, transportation, insurance and other sustainable items which the government cannot pay for.

The name “Devil Pups” was conceived after observing that the German troops, during World War I, gave the United States Marines opposing them in battle, the name “Devil Dogs” because of their battlefield accomplishments and valor of the Marines. This success and challenge under stress is a fitting precursor for the name “Devil Pups”.

In summer, 1954, Camp Pendleton Commanding General John T. Selden, granted permission for Devil Pups, Inc. to bring aboard 1800 boys 14 to 17 years of age. In 1998, Devil Pups, Inc. welcomed its first platoon of girls into the program. Through the efforts of the active duty and reserve Marines working with the volunteers in the charitable corporation – Devil Pups, Inc. – the program has grown into a highly successful annual project. As we entered the year 2004 over 44,000 young teenagers have graduated from this Good Citizenship-Physical Development Program.
