In the late 1880's, the only analytical balances available in America were manufactured and serviced in Europe. English immigrant, William Ainsworth, recognized the opportunity for a U.S. manufacturer and entered the market with innovative analytical balance designs. Around 1895, Ainsworth introduced the company's first short-beam analytical which significantly reduced weighing time and improved reliability. The short-beam design was also one of the first commercial uses for aluminum.
