Title

Global Deaf Connection

Description

Global Deaf Connection is increasing social, economic and educational opportunities for Deaf people in developing nations. Based on the premise that education leads to opportunity, Global Deaf Connection (GDC) was created to improve equal access to education and employment by closing the gap between the number of Deaf children enrolled in school and the number of Deaf adults in the professional world.

In many school systems in developing countries hearing teachers, who are trained to instruct hearing students, are employed in schools for Deaf children. GDC's Cycle of Success taps into resources from the U.S. and other countries to enable these teachers to teach their Deaf students effectively. GDC recruits volunteer mentors and pairs them with these teachers to provide training in sign language and Deaf Education teaching techniques that increase communication and heighten the success of lessons. Students respond to this change in pedagogy and are more likely to succeed in their education.

The Cycle does not end with this increased effectiveness of Deaf education in targeted countries. Bridging the communication gap between teachers and students only begins the process of eliminating cultural stereotypes within schools. There are still barriers and cultural stereotypes that prohibit successful Deaf students from transitioning into active professional roles as adults. GDC thus has created a College Support Program to create equal access to higher education so that Deaf students can achieve professional degrees and partner with the government and private sector to find jobs in their chosen fields. GDC provides support services and advocates for equal employment opportunities for Deaf people.
