The Facilities Engineering players have been plagued by information ownership of documentation in the capital facilities industry from the first building design document ever written. Simply put the Capital Facilities space is still living in the 2 dimensional world of documents and cabinets full of paper based facility information and has not transformed information sharing beyond planning meetings and CAD systems as evidenced by a 2004 NIST study citing $15.8 billion wasted in non interoperable systems in the industry.

NDI's DCIAM™, describes as an object model parametric attributes of it assets covering in real-time 3D/4D/5D geometry, spatial relationships, functional missions, relationships to other objects and properties of data center facility components (for example manufacturers' tangible configuration details). DCIAM™ can be used to demonstrate the entire data center lifecycle including but not limited to the processes of design, as built, current operations and down stream "what if" scenarios.. Physical/Logical and Business Rules intelligence is shared as an addittion into the properties of IT/Infrastructure Assets which can easily be defined and described as relationships within a holistic approach..

DCIAM™ is able to achieve such improvements by modeling representations of the actual components deployed within a Data Center floor or the entire facility. This is a substantial shift from the traditional computer aided drafting method of drawing with vector file based lines that combine to represent objects. The interoperability requirements of Data Center assets among the stakeholders and federated stovepipes of relevant information include not only the IT Assets but front end and back end work process flow such as drawings, procurement details, environmental conditions, submittal processes and other specifications for data center build out operation and provisioning.
