Daylily Dreams and Hosta Haven Home

Our journey began just as many of yours. We were new homeowners building in an old empty field. We began looking for some simple foundation plants, grass and an irrigation system. We sent out for bids and wow did we have sticker-shock! Some estimates were around $17,000! Knowing that was way-out of our ballpark, we decided to do it ourselves. I'll be honest, I had never appreciated flowers prior (as a matter-of-fact I can remember telling some of the landscape contractors that I didn't want any of that "flowery stuff" in our landscapes---LOL!). Never before had I longed for the first daffodil's bloom, appreciated the beauty of a mixed border, or known the imminence of spring that a flowering forsythia can bring. Oh how that would change!
We set forth to our local garden center, stunned with the variety and color. A truck-full of shrubs returned home (along with our first shovel) and we began the task of digging holes (amendments? We don't need that...) and planting our new arrivals (few of which survive to this day). A good friend helped with an underground irrigation system, a contractor for grass seed and ta-dah!, we had the same landscape as every other house in the area.
single, discounted and not-blooming Little Grapette daylily among the other end-of season purchases. Planted without care, forgotten until summer and then.....a bloom and some color. Hmmm, that's not bad we thought. A quick internet search for "daylily" later I stumbled upon a picture of Carmen Marie. Three-hundred dollars later, it was over and the addiction had begun. The addiction was reinforced with Wayside Painted Lady and the first bloom of the year starring Egyptian Ibis.
