- First Rupert Bear and his menagerie of anthropomorphic pals. I suspect this came about because my father had always had a yearly fix of harcore bear action from his parents and he wished to see the tradition continued. I liked them well enough, when they dabbled in the wilds of faerie or bizarre underwater castles at least, though the origami page that came as a permanent fixture drove me to distraction (it seemed so complex to me that I imagine a proud Japanese paper folder may well have ended his life rather than admit the inevitable failure to create a pond lily or troop carrier from crisp foolscap. In my defence whenever the damn thing had me stumped I would take the book to my father and ask for his assistance, he would invariably find himself ‘too busy right now’ which in hindsight proves that he was just as baffled by the damn things as I).
