Portland fashion accessories designer sells globally

When Portland entrepreneur Dana Herbert designed her very first scarf in her studio 11 years ago, little did she know that one day her fashion accessories would be shipped around the USA to eager customers.

But Herbert never doubted that she could make a go of her fashion accessories business. Working first with scarves and later with handbags, she found she had an eye and a feel for fabrics that women would like--and products that made their owner look that much smarter.

Today, DanaHerbert.com scarves and handbags can be found displayed at such catalog retailers as Signals, Made in Oregon, Boston Museum of Fine Arts, University of Oregon Bookstore and grocery retailer Whole Foods.

A mutually beneficial fashion accessories Arrangement

DanaHerbert.com's very first retail customer was a small Portland, OR, gift boutique The Arrangement. Sales of her designer scarves and handbags have increased steadily over the years; The Arrangement serves as a strong local base of operations and a test market for Dana Herbert's accessories.

"This fall, The Arrangement will be featuring our latest new product: our rayon jersey scarves," she said. "We released a sample batch to our regular customers and they were a major hit. We've got very high hopes for this line, which I designed myself."

Dana Herbert takes great pride in the fact that her products are locally designed (by her) and manufactured in Portland.

"Many people still care about the 'Made in America' label," Dana Herbert says. "I think it says that this product is designed here, hand-made here, and is not mass produced in a far-off fab somewhere across the globe."

In many cases, her customers--especially gallery and museum stores--will only buy items that are made in America. "In the fashion industry, it can be seen as a sign of high quality to the customer," she says.

DanaHerbert.com felt the recession like every other fashion designer. But the company took the economy's best shots and held firm, largely due to the owner's rapid response to market conditions.

"I cut costs where I could and continued to explore new marketing opportunities. That combination worked. Now, we're ready to expand again once the economy rebounds," she says.
