Cradle Mountain. CradleMountain.com - Your home of everything to do with Cradle Mountain. Cradle Mountain webcam, Cradle Mountain walks, Cradle Mountain accommodation, Cradle Mountain maps and things to do around the Cradle Mountain region. Cradle Mountain In Tasmania's central highlands mountain peaks rise from button grass plains and highland tarns sparkle in the sun. Visitors to the area experience a wilderness adventure, whether they take part in the easy walk around Dove Lake, or become one of the hardy souls who conquer the Overland Track. A range of guided and unguided walks are available. There is no fast food and no bright lights at Cradle Mountain, but the night sky will put on a display of stars you may never have seen before. Cradle Mountain forms the northern end of the wild Cradle Mt - Lake St Clair National Park, itself a part of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. The jagged contours of Cradle Mountain epitomise the feel of a wild landscape, while ancient rainforest and alpine heathlands, buttongrass and stands of colourful deciduous beech provide a range of environments to explore. Icy streams cascading out of rugged mountains, stands of ancient pines mirrored in the still waters of glacial lakes and a wealth of wildlife ensure there is always something to captivate you. The area is one of the most popular natural areas in Tasmania. A visit will reveal why. Cradle is the starting point for the world-famous Overland Track, a magnificent 5 day walk that will take you through the heart of some of the finest mountain terrain. Parks & Wildlife run a comprehensive Visitor Information Centre at the entrance to the park. You can obtain your National Parks Pass here - a requirement for entry to any National Park in Tasmania. Passes are available on a daily, holiday or annual basis, for an individual or for a car. The rangers at the centre will assist you in purchasing a suitable pass. Visitors must remember that this area is a national park, and a wilderness area. Everyone needs to care for the delicate environment. Follow boardwalks and marked paths, as some of the delicate alpine vegetation can take up to 20 years to recover from a careless boot print. Pack it in, pack it out - don't leave rubbish or personal items behind. The web cam on this page is installed at Cosy Cabins Cradle Mountain and it is pointed towards Cradle Mountain itself. What you see is what you get, so if all you see is shifting fog, then it is probably a very foggy day on the mountain and we hope not a broken camera. You may want to check again in a couple of hours, as the weather does change rapidly on the mountain. The weather is... changeable. Day visitors should be sure to have a rain coat and a warm jacket, even in summer. If taking longer hikes, talk to Parks & WIldlife about correct clothing and gear before setting out. Please remember to provide them with your route and estimated arrival time. Always remember to check in when you return. Please do not feed the animals. The first reason is they are wild and may bite you. It can be extremely harmful for animals to become dependent on assistance from humans or to lose their survival based fear of humans. For instance, bread can cause a debilitating disease called Lumpy Jaw, in native marsupials, and other foods can be harmful as well. This said, some animals are not backward in searching for a feed of human food! Possums especially will tear into a tent, squeeze through a crack in a car window or rip open a back pack in search of food, they especially love sweet food, like Tim Tams (well they are Australian aren't they!). And remember, to a possum, toothpaste and some lotions or creams smell like food. Currawongs are also excellent scavengers and they won't wait till you take the food off the picnic table to dig in. Dusk is the best time to see native animals, especially the less mischievious ones like wallabies and wombats. An overnight stay at Cradle Mountain provides the perfect opportunity to take a walk with a torch and spot some of our amazing natives.
