Website

CoventryHealth.com is a jewel of minimalist, corporate design. While avoiding the usage of advanced web technologies, the various sections of the website are very easy to navigate and the website excels at providing a horizontal surfing experience, making easy access between the various parts.

The front page acts as a portal to the quite numerous branches, but also provides access to the standard corporate features such as the “Careers”, “Corporate Philosophy” or “Investor Relations” sections. A somewhat underdeveloped section is the company’s history part, understandable perhaps as the rough ride through which Coventry Health went through does not match the brand image that the company wishes to promote.

Mentioning the brand image, CoventryHealth.com is extremely well built to convey the careful crafted image that the company wants to promote. In every section of the site, the marketing touch is visible which means that this is obviously a consumer oriented web presence.

History

Coventry’s founder is Phil Bredesen, a Harvard graduate, who decided in 1980 to start his own business. He first launched Healthplans, later sold to Mexicare Health Plans, Inc. for 47 million dollars (his share).

Now rich, Bredesen associates with Joseph Williams and found in 1986 Coventry Corporation. The company extended fast by its acquisitions all over America, in which Bresden invested millions. Revenues grew from 642 million dollars to 777 million dollars in one year (1994).

The years to come were very tumultuous: the company lost: in 1995 Coventry lost two major accounts in Pennsylvania market and in 1996 registered a loss of 61, 2 million. Bredesen decided to close some of its minor companies in order to remedy the situation. They obtained a loan of 40 million dollars which stabilized the financial crisis. In 1997 Coventry Health’s policy finally paid off as the company recovered and registered a profit, earning over 12 million in revenue. Finally, in November 1997 Bredesen’s company merged with Principal Health Care and the new named Coventry Health Care moved its headquarter to Bethesda, although Phil Bredesen disagreed with the change of headquarters.

The following years saw the company evolve by new acquisitions and in April 2002 Coventry Health saw its inclusion in the prestigious Fortune 500 list, a presence which would continue uninterrupted during the following years.

Impact

Coventry Health is widely perceived as one of the main players in the healthcare market and is thus seen in the same light as the industry itself. While there are some praises towards the quality of the medical care that US boasts, there are also detractors that accuse the company of not sharing its wealth with the less fortunate and constantly lobbying against a more protective nationwide social healthcare system which would also protect the uninsured. The objectivity of such claims is hard to assess as the company itself doesn’t deal directly with this issue and its implications in the Washington lobby groups has yet to be proved as consistent.
