- In the midst of his newest career, a candy salesman from Dallas arrived one day to make an off-hand, life-altering suggestion: "You should make taffy and sell it with the popcorn." He gave Mr. McCraw a candy thermometer, a recipe and a pulling hook to make taffy. McCraw bought fifty cents worth of sugar, brought it home and recruited his wife to make candy. Selling it beside his popcorn, McCraw soon was earning five or six dollars a day, a terrific sum of money for those days. Every day, he sold the candy from a humble box which hung from his neck.
