Cornelis Schipper brought his company to the United States after World War II, and took Dutch bulbs from customer to customer in his business coupe. COLORBLENDS, part of Schipper & Company, is still family owned, run by a third generation flowerbulb merchant, who drives a mini-van. We still sell bulbs to some of the same customers Cornelis visited 50 years ago, but now we use a catalog and this web site, too.The name COLORBLENDS reflects our goal of making unprecedented spring displays easy and rewarding for our customers. The Schipper team(picture above left) circa 1935 were from left to right, Dirk Schipper, Cees van Zwaag, Jan Manshanden, Paul Buysman and my grandfather Nicolaas Schipper. Before any mechanized harvesting, the bulbs pictured left were planted and harvested by hand. The beds were 1 meter wide and 14 meters long. This would be called one “roe.” There would then be 700 “roe” per hectare (2.471 acres) of land.
