I have been making photographs since I was 8 years old. My mother gave me an old Kodak Brownie camera to keep me occupied while visiting at my aunt's home in Galveston, Texas. After shooting most of the film, I opened the back of the camera to see how I was doing. Needless to say, I don't have any images to show for that day! It was a valuable lesson! By the time I was in 5th grade I was on my second camera - a Kodak Brownie Starflex. When I was in 7th grade I was using a bathroom for a darkroom, making contact prints from my black and white negative. I am still amazed by the photographic process and still learning and photographing everything I see around me. You'll find me shooting doors, windows, buildings, reflections, flowers, trees, landscapes, flowing water, adults, children, pets, food. I seem to have a knack for photographing children, perhaps because I am still a child at heart!
I enjoy photographing in both color and in black and white depending on the subject. I photograph with both film and digital cameras and you'll find me printing images both in the darkroom and on the computer. I make Polaroid image transfers and emulsion transfers. Sometimes you'll see me with a pinhole camera.
I have been influenced and inspired by many photographers. After years of my mother dragging me to museums in New York, Washington, Fort Worth, Dallas, and Houston, the first exhibit that really stuck with me was at the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, Texas during the early 1960s. It was a special exhibition of Edward Weston photographs. The peppers grabbed my attention and have stuck with me since. I can still see the exhibit, the light, the room, the photographs. I have also been touched by many other photographers representing a number of very different styles: Tina Modotti, Imogen Cunningham, Robert Adams, Yousuf Karsh, Sally Mann, Linda McCartney, Alfred Stieglitz, Dewitt Jones, Michael Kenna, and. . . the list continues to grow.
