Yes, our last name really is Coffee. Becky and Randy Coffee, to be exact, and we originally hail from Dayton, Ohio but in 2004 found ourselves in Hampton, Iowa. Randy was continuing his career as a top-line marketing executive, but I decided to trade in my career of selling steel for an apron and a career in peddling a hot cup of cappuccino.
When asked why the unlikely turn in careers, I tell people it's because we didn't see a quaint little coffee shop in the area, one where the atmosphere just makes the food taste better and the drinks taste better. We found a niche in the community. Hampton didn't have an upscale coffee house.
With that in mind we purchased a storefront building in the middle of downtown Hampton and got to work. We tore down walls, ripped apart nearly everything, and rebuilt using a vision derived from our experiences traveling the country. The place had to have class. The place had to be gracious and welcoming. The place had to have great food and drink. The place had to make people smile.
