Description
COPD-ALERT is a nonprofit, INTERNET-based SUPPORT and ADVOCACY group for COPD patients, caregivers, medical professionals, and all those who care. Our membership extends to nearly all states and to several foreign countries. Although many of our members are senior citizens, we experience an increased influx of baby boomers. COPD-ALERT actively solicits medical information and pro bono professional advice from medical organizations, licensed respiratory specialists, and pharmacologists. We have been working with the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute , American Thoracic Society , US COPD Coalition , among others, to provide COPD patients with information about clinical trials, specialized clinics, available medications, new therapies, and disease management via the Internet.
The SUPPORT aspect means that our dynamic group shares personal experiences. We dis-cuss symptoms, disease management, medicines, treatment, respiratory equipment, research findings, medical news, family and social aspects of the disease, medical providers, insurance carriers, and available medical benefits. None of the opinions, suggestions, and explanations is binding and members are urged to look for professional diagnosis and treatment in their physicians’ offices.
The ADVOCACY aspect means vocal advocacy of massive funding for COPD-related re-search aiming at developing of effective COPD-specific medications and treatment for this de-debilitating and deadly disease.
