Years ago, Sue Conley, A.K.A. Krakel the Clown, A.K.A. Magical Myrna, was troubled by the fact that good selections of quality clown supplies were very difficult to find, except at conventions. Sue, and her partner Doug Chapman, A.K.A. Crabapple the Clown, opened Clown City in December of 1990, in Gales Ferry, Connecticut. Their goal has always been to provide the greatest possible variety of quality products for clowns, magicians, jugglers, and entertainers. Their success has necessitated moving their store three times now, each time to a larger location! The most recent move to Taftville, Connecticut was required after the incredible success of their first catalog. Clown City’s first catalog was printed in the Summer of 1996, and it was distributed, literally, around the world!
In order to further the art of clowning, Sue and Doug have taught The Clown in You, a fun class held at their store, which throughout the years, has given several hundred, young and old, the chance to know the joy of clowning. Sue and Doug also have hosted their own Clown Convention in historic Mystic, Connecticut, each year since 1994. In addition to dedicating themselves to the store, Sue and Doug have attended conventions from Ohio to Maine where they have given lectures, provided workshops, and retailed supplies in dealers’ rooms. In their spare time, they entertain at many birthday parties with balloon deliveries, comedy magic, moon walks, dunk tanks, face painting and balloon art! They can be found regularly doing Puppet Ministry for their church. One of their fondest memories was having Clown City featured on The Today Show!
Clown City's second catalog was printed in November of 2002. It is a full color catalog that contains more than 275 pages of supplies for professional clowns, magicians, puppeteers, jugglers and entertainers of all kinds. The catalog also contains an extensive selection of books for the Christian Youth Worker, Clown Minister, and skits for clowns, puppets, mimes and Christian Drama.
