I am a writer and cook specializing in the regional cuisines of the Mediterranean and Italy. My particular speciality is the culinary history of these regions and food history in general throughout the world. My book, A Mediterranean Feast: The Story of the Birth of the Celebrated Cuisines of the Mediterranean from the Merchants of Venice to the Barbary Corsairs was the winner of the 2000 James Beard Foundation/KitchenAid Cookbook of the Year and the Beard award for the Best Writing on Food and was also a finalist for the International Association of Culinary Professionals Cookbook of the Year award. I have published both cookbooks and books on foreign affairs. My interest in cooking is to seek out recipes and understand the historical roots of foods we eat today that are from the Mediterranean or are Mediterranean-inspired. I look for authentic home cooking with robust tastes that exemplify the rich pantry of celebrated Mediterranean cuisines. My research into Mediterranean cuisines led the New York Times to feature me as one of their "Cooks on the Map," a series heralding some of the most exciting and innovative cooking in America. My efforts can be read about in feature stories that have appeared in The New York Times, New York Newsday, Boston Globe, Miami Herald, and Sacramento Bee.
