Title

Classical Contemporary Music of Joe Giarrusso - Classical Music

Description

In Seasons, Opus 3, the composer captures the rhythms of the changing seasons in a variety of musical forms and textures. Spring depicts both the gentle and stormy aspects of the season in its contrasting sections. In his instructions to the performer, Giarrusso indicates that Summer should be played in a "lush and lazy" manner. An American influence is heard in this piece, its soft, idyllic nature recalling an earlier and simpler time. Autumn portrays the joy of harvest-time and the melancholy of winter's advent, while Winter (which follows without pause) presents a stark, chilling scene in its Impressionistic setting.

American Serenade, Opus 8, for flute and piano, revives the sensibilities of the early 20th century and incorporates elements of jazz in its middle section.

Opus 4 contains five Preludes: Lento; Andante con moto; Allegro; Adagio; and Vivace. Highly contrasting in mood and tempo, these short pieces are atonal in nature and adopt current trends of 20th century music in their use of serial technique, tone clusters, changing meters and syncopation.
