Katherine was elected to the Melrose School Committee in 2001. She served as Chairman of the School Committee for her entire first term. During that time, she fought to move the Melrose Schools forward while funding from the state was dramatically cut. She made the hard decisions, but with an open, inclusive process. During her first term on the School Committee she also chaired the Superintendent Search Committee, the Redistricting Task Force, and the Kindergarten Committee. She participated on the strategic planning steering committee, educational programs and personnel subcommittee, policy subcommittee, and was appointed by Mayor Dolan to the Middle School Planning Committee. She topped the ticket out of 11 candidates to win re-election in November 2003 and is Vice Chairman of the Finance Committee.
Katherine worked as a prosecutor for the Colorado Attorney General's Office and for the Colorado District Attorneys Council. She prosecuted felony cases in the appellate courts and helped change the law to better protect the public. She successfully worked with a coalition of law enforcement to pass important legislation to protect victims of crime and improve the public safety.
