Chuck grew up on Pear Plain Farm, his family farm located on the Eastern Shore. The farm has been in the family for 150 years. His brother, Bill, still farms around 500 acres and raises soybeans, rye, wheat, red and white potatoes.
Chuck learned the value of hard work at an early age. He started working on the farm at the age of 6 when he was responsible for feeding the horses, cows, pigs, sheep, and chickens each morning before school and in the afternoon after school. At that time cabbage, peppers, corn, tomatoes, strawberries, potatoes, and soybeans were the major crops.
