Watched How to Draw a Bunny last night, something Carole had recorded from the Sundance Channel a while back. Though I think of myself as pretty hip to the history of 20th century American painting, I’d never heard of Johnson, who, from the story the film tells, seems quintessential rather than marginal. This despite the fact that Johnson himself understood the power of the margin & worked it with great genius the way a surfer works a killer wave. He appears to have had no life but art.

This reminded me of another story I read recently. Clearly, if there is a God, he has a perverse sense of humor.
