We go in for simple design, traditional colors, folk themes, vernacular materials. Many of our gifts are on the "endangered species list" of folk design aesthetics. If you buy them, we want you to do so because they appeal to you and because you like them. We are familiar with many of the people who make these delightful objects, and with the region of Germany where they live. Their work combines elements of art and craft. They use local materials and work from old patterns. Some of them have been formally trained. But more importantly, nearly all of them grew up learning traditional techniques and design in communities where folk artisanry was treasured. They operate out of family workshops and craft their products individually or in small runs.
