COACHING, according to Gary Collins in his recent book Christian Coaching "… is the art and practice of guiding a person or group from where they are toward the greater competence and fulfillment that they desire." (16) I say it is a way of helping people move from "life is okay" to "life is outstanding!" Unlike therapy, which is inclined to focus on pathology and healing of pain, coaching is more about possibilities and potential. Your coach is a trained and experienced facilitator who helps you to define and plan your own unique growth program.
MENTORING, one aspect of coaching, suggests a relationship between two people where one person with a little more experience and know-how in a given arena shares with, encourages and supports another's growth in that same arena. For example, an established and successful counselor might agree to guide less experienced counselors in their professional growth.
CHRISTIAN coaching differs from other coaching in several ways. First, the Christian coach recognizes that there is no such thing as a "values neutral" stand. The Christian coach is a person who longs for everyone to know and serve the Lord. This is what the Lord expects of a Christian. Second, the Christian coach approaches life from a Biblical perspective, a perspective where absolutes, and the concepts of right" and "wrong" are understood and accepted. Finally, the Christian coach, accepting Bible study, prayer and discipleship as necessary parts of life will include prayer, scripture and discussion of spiritual issues in a coaching session.
