Description

Asthma is a disease that causes the muscles surrounding the bronchial tubes in the lungs to contract more than they should, narrowing the air passages. The lining of the air passages becomes inflamed and swollen. Increased mucus production begins to block the passage of air into the lungs.

Often asthma attacks are brought on by "triggers". Common triggers include; cold air, viruses, smoke, exercise, dust mites, and inhaled irritants. Some inhaled irritants that cause asthma attacks are; smoke, the dander of furry pets, dust, and chemicals. Genetics are also a factor. In rare instances, some foods can trigger an attack.

Up to 20% of children have some degree of asthma. For many children their asthma will reoccur when they are adults. Asthma diagnosed as mild, will in some children, develop into severe asthma. Asthma is one of the most common diseases in the world and it is increasing dramatically.
