The MISSION of the Coalition for HIV Awareness and Prevention (CHAP)

CHAP’s mission is to educate the public about the nature, prevention, treatment and impact of HIV/AIDS, to coordinate efforts of existing public or private resources for persons living with HIV/AIDS, to discover unmet needs of people with HIV/AIDS and their families, and to stimulate and support community responses to meet those needs.

CHAP was formed in September of 2000 with the mission is to reduce the spread of HIV and ensure a compassionate response to both infected and affected persons in Central VA.

CHAP has coordinated and implemented programs on the international, national, state, and local levels. These programs include International AIDS Memorial and Mobilization, World AIDS Day, National HIV Testing Day, and The Black Church Week of Prayer for the Healing of AIDS. Upon request, CHAP has educated the community by providing HIV awareness in schools, civic organizations, youth centers, jails, businesses, colleges, and churches. If you are interested in having a speaker at your workplace or agency, please contact Gloria Berkley, President, at 434-455-5082.

CHAP receives no program funding at this time except for the generosity of the community and individual donations.
