Description

The band of the Chelmsford Citadel corps of The Salvation Army was formed in about 1886 soon after the arrival of the Army in Chelmsford. It is currently made up of about 35 men and women who give their time freely to the band as a method of attracting others to know the love of God in their lives.

As with all SA corps bands, the bandsmen are drawn from many walks of life. They include a former police officer, a probation officer, a professional musician, a doctor, trading standards officer, an architect, students and others involved financial services. We have also recently welcomed into the band two commissioned SA officers whose appointments make it possible for them to join in with the band's activities.

Over the years the band have featured in a number of big Salvation Army events at Alexandra Palace, the Crystal Palace and the Royal Albert Hall. Under Simon's guidance the band has played at the Snape Maltings, Aldeburgh and the International Centre, Brentwood. They have also been involved in a number of recordings for both local and national radio, the latest being for two editions of the Sunday half hour programme broadcast on BBC Radio 2 in December 2001. They have also made two CDs in conjunction with the Songster Brigade (or choir) from the corps which have been featured a number of times on BBC radio. Details of the CDs can be found elsewhere on this site.
