Title

Catholic Family Life Insurance, Financial Security for Catholics

Description

With hearts full of hope, thousands of Catholic immigrants came to the United States in the mid-1800s seeking a better way of life. In keeping with tradition, they built settlements around their churches, and formed close-knit communities. They found comfort living near people from their homeland, who shared their language and their faith. Those strong bonds did not, however, help families withstand the financial difficulties that resulted from the death of a wage earner. When thousands of widows and orphans were faced with the destruction and financial hardship resulting from the Civil War and smallpox epidemics, John Martin Henni, the first Bishop of Milwaukee, sought a way to provide relief.

Bishop Henni summoned 21 men, all members of benevolent societies, to assist him in devising a new means to protect families, one that combined the philosophy of fraternalism with life insurance. On August 16, 1868, the Family Protective Association was formed; it was later renamed Catholic Family Life Insurance. Over a century later, Catholic Family saw considerable growth when, in 1991 and 1993 respectively, two other societies were merged into Catholic Family, Union Saint-Jean-Baptiste in New England and Northern Fraternal Life in Wisconsin.
