Description

Merced is located in the central valley of California and is known as the Gateway to Yosemite - Yosemite National Park is only a two hour drive from Merced. The winters are usually very mild and summers are very hot and dry. If you want a brief summary of things to do in Merced.

Merced, a quiet town of over 60,000 residents, still maintains a small town feel. People here have a gentle nature and really seem to appreciate their agricultural heritage. The region is very flat - in fact Merced's elevation is approximately 172 feet above sea level. Many acres of grazing land surround the town, along with fruit orchards, cotton fields, and the sweetest strawberries you'll find anywhere! You can get a taste of the fresh fruits and vegetables at the Farmers Market, every Thursday during the summer.

It was this rich, fertile land that brought pioneers here in the late 1800's. They moved in and established their families' roots, shortly after the Central Pacific Railroad stretched from San Francisco south in the valley into what is now Merced. The railroad remains very active, and as the peaceful evening settles in, one can hear the sound of the trains' whistles from almost anywhere in town.
