The island of Cozumel is a small island below the Yucatan peninsula, Mexico.
The island has a long history but it became popular to tourists in 1961 when Jacques Cousteau declared it to be one of the most beautiful scuba diving areas in the world. The clarity and green/blue hues of the water has to be experienced to be believed. Visibility for divers can often be a staggering 100 - 200 feet! Fish of all species abound for divers and snorklers alike and for those who prefer to stay dry, the sands are powder soft.
The people are mainly of Mayan decent and are without doubt the most friendly in the Carribean area. Crime is exceptionally low here. Many locals are English speaking ... but of course they love to assist your attempts at Spanish and might even introduce you to Mayan. The US dollar is accepted as readily as the Peso and wide acceptance of credit cards and availability swipe ATM's prevent you ever having to consider exchange rates.
For those who prefer the traditional Cozumel vacation route ... there is an abundance of hotels ranging from the all inclusives to the little friendly "mom and pop" hotels where you will become one of the family as soon as you arrive.
Casa Olivia vacation rental will give you a taste of the local life while you enjoy all the amenities you expect at when at home. Casa Olivia is located close to town, restaurants, shopping, cinemas, bowling and the Chedraui supermarket, which compares well to any modern supermarket back home.
Many may be aware the island was hit by two major hurricanes in 2005. Emily and her bigger sister Wilma, who liked Cozumel so much she hung around the island for a full three days!
The Cozumeleños however are not a people to be kept down for long and within months of Wilma, their worst hurricane in years, they sprang back with a recovery that was nothing short of amazing. The majority of the buildings are concrete so many properties, including Casa Olivia, came through with only cosmetic damage. Repairs have been speedy, and in many cases places are even better than before. New trees have been planted and thanks to the tropical climate gardens are now thriving with foliage and colour. A visitor to Cozumel today, who knew nothing of the event, would be hard pressed to notice anything out of place.
Once you visit Cozumel for your vacation ... you will want to return again and again.
