I have often been asked what got me interested in photography and always reply “people”. My first experience with a camera was in the hurly burly madness of Hong Kong’s “Chinatown” in 1958. There, as a little boy looking for a scoop and armed only with his trusty Brownie, I would wander into gloomy shop interiors, sit on the pavement among the street hawkers, beggars and opium smokers, help gut fish and, without fail, eat whatever was put in front of me.
Way back then I appreciated that moment of capture and, although my photos hardly reflected it, I learned the art of waiting. Listening. Watching. And anticipating that elusive, split second photo opportunity.
A great friend and brilliant photographer once told me that at the first opportunity you have to take a candid or wildlife photo don’t start composing or waiting for a better frame, just hit the shutter. It may be the only chance you have and, if not, you can keep taking pictures as the opportunity continues to improve. That premise has stood me in good stead throughout, but what a way to burn through film during all those pre-digital days!
