Cancun - How was it born? In the 1970's Mexico's tourism planners decided that a deserted sand spit on the Yucatan peninsula close to the small fishing village of Puerto Juarez was the ideal location for a major tourist mecca and they set about building a brand new world class resort. Today Cancun, with a permanent population of 500,000, is Mexico's premier tourist destination, attracting 2.7 million visitors every year from all over the world.
Cancun has two distinct areas each with their own character and particular attractions. Downtown see map, is the city part of Cancun where most of the locals live, it is a city similar in many respects to any other. The Hotel Zone, however, caters purely for tourists with over 100 hotels and it is here that most of the major themed restaurants, bars and nightclubs are found. The Hotel Zone is shaped like a 7 extending from the mainland 9km eastward and then 14km southward see map for more details.
Some people are surprised to learn that the Hotel Zone is in fact an island, joined to the mainland at the western end by a bridge leading to Ciudad Cancun (City of Cancun) often referred to as 'downtown' and at the southern end by a bridge leading to the international airport. Thirty years ago the island had a population of just 3 - workers who tended a coconut plantation! The inside of the '7' is occupied by a brackish lagoon known as Laguna Nichupte. The north face of the '7' is a bay sheltered by an island 'Isla Mujeres' (yes another map) the eastern part of the '7' fronts the Caribbean Sea and it is in this part that the best beaches are found.
