Title

Cowboy Artists of America

Description

Many considered Joe the heart and soul of the organization he helped form on June 23, 1965. Joe will be remembered by everyone who knew him. His friendships spanned the wealthiest of collectors to the everyday, working cowboys with whom he loved to share time during round-ups and ropings.

He was with John Hampton and Charlie Dye on the ranch in Magdalena, Sonora on that brisk fall round up over 40 years ago when they discussed the concept for an organization of like minded artists dedicated to preserving the heritage of the west and enjoying each others company in the traditional way of gathering on an annual trail ride. Joe, Johnny and Charlie met with Prescott artist George Phippen at the Oak Creek Tavern on June 23, and together they founded the organization that prospers today due in large part to their vision and their legacy.

Joe was in the same seat in front of the stone fireplace at the Oak Creek Tavern (now known as the Cowboy Bar) forty years later to the day when the CAA celebrated their 40th anniversary on June 23, 2005. He was joined by his fellow CAs Bill Owen, Fred Fellows, John Moyers, John Coleman and Wayne Baize. Governor Janet Napolitano proclaimed the day Cowboy Artists of America Day in the State of Arizona.
