About Me | Disclosures

JEFF JARVIS is former TV critic for TV Guide and People, creator of Entertainment Weekly, Sunday editor and associate publisher of the NY Daily News, and a columnist on the San Francisco Examiner. He was until recently president & creative director of Advance.net, the online arm of Advance Publications. Now he is working as editor of a new news startup, still in stealth. He is working with The New York Times Company at About.com on content development and strategy and consulting for Advance and Fairchild. In September 2006, he will become associate professor and director of the interactive journalism program the City University of New York’s new Graduate School of Journalism. He is a columnist for Media Guardian. He says he is at work on a book.

Business ties: I now consult for The New York Times Company at its About.com and sometimes for the New York Times Online but not as of now for the newspaper, though I have spoken with management there and know various staffers. I continue to consult for Advance Publications, mainly at what was known as Fairchild; Advance also owns Newhouse Newspapers, Conde Nast, Parade, Ameican City Business Journals, and Advance Internet, where I used to work. I’ve consulted for Hearst newspapers. I consulted for the City University of New York’s new graduate school of journalism and will join the faculty there in 2006. I have consulted for and spoken for groups at The Guardian, VH1, Hill & Knowlton, Burda, Edelman, the BBC, and at various conferences. I am also working on a few startups that are still in stealth and so I can’t reveal their lines of business or funders (though Craig Newmark has identified himself as a personal investor); I will when I can. I have been asked to join the advisory boards of Brightcove, Dawntreader, Consenda, and (I think) Technorati; advisory boards bring varying amounts of options or payments.

Media ties: I have worked for many a media company — Advance, Time Warner, Hearst, Tribune, Maxwell, News Corp., Knight Ridder — and know people and have friends in most of them. I have been turned down for jobs or contributor gigs, over the years (these are from the early years) at The NY Times, the NY Daily News, Paramount, and CBS. I turned down jobs elsewhere. I make some would say too-frequent appearances on TV and radio but I am not paid for them (and I’ve been known to growl about that). I am now writing as a columnist for Media Guardian.
