- You might like to know a bit about my background and why I am a counselor. I'm one of those folks who knew what I'd be doing for a career from the time I was in high school. Well almost. I did briefly consider becoming a lawyer or minister during my first year of college, but counseling always had the inside track. I never actually had any experience with counseling as a child and no one in my family was remotely involved with the field. But, I was the youngest child with 2 older sisters and had an unusually gentle father (especially for the 1950's), so I suppose I was immersed in the "female style" of communication from the cradle. (Yes, I am suggesting women naturally communicate in a manner that is more disclosing and emotion based - and I believe the research will back me up there.) But, I imagine becoming a counselor was mostly a natural extension of my inherent temperament and interests. I remember even as a young child watching people and wondering about why they chose to do the things they did... and later as an adolescent, having a pretty good intuitive understanding of why they were doing as they did.
