In the summer of 1999, my wife and I were shopping for a new faucet. We visited two upscale hardware dealers and were left with a bad taste in our mouth by the way we were treated by their sales representatives. At one store, we had to wait an hour just to order a faucet that would take 3-4 weeks to receive. At another, the sales representative told us to come back when we had a babysitter! After this experience we felt we could do a much better job.
I have been selling commercial hardware for the past 15 years, and had the contacts for most of the upscale hardware manufacturers. After receiving the literature from a few companies we set into motion our plan. First we researched the different product lines. Then we started to work on our web site layout. And the final step was to market Builders Home Hardware.
Our strategy involves two philosophies: Keeping our prices as low as possible, and selling to individual homeowners at the same price as builders. To do this we have to keep our costs minimal. This involves stocking as little as possible, and direct shipping the product to our customer from the factory.
