BruceLiles.com - creating bilingual educational songs for children

BruceLiles2.jpg

Enigmatic BruceLiles has been creating projects across the artistic spectrum for many years for many reasons ranging from educating kids whose parents immigrated from Mexico to compiling and performing a one man play called the Ghost of Woody Guthrie to writing and singing songs about social justice and relationships gone well in astray. Bruce and Cindy began singing together in 2008. They open the Jasper Farmers Market this June 6th at 9AM (corner of 3rd and Main).

Brains like to learn

Bruce Liles

In April of 2003, Bruce Liles was walking with the first grade class he taught on Detroit's southwest side. Next to him, Karen a 6-year old Bhudda-child was listening to Bruce, "Brains like to learn," he said. She thought a moment, smiled, and said, "Yes, it's like their food."

Karen knows the secret. Learning is Fun! and 'K is for Kids' is Bilingual, Educational Fun!

This CD of educational songs in English and Spanish will help children improve language skills and basic educational material. (ABC's, 1,2,3's, days of the week, months of the year, math, and more.)

The adulation for Bruce's work has been international. Bruce first received praise for his educational songs in a remote, Guatemalan mountain village. From the hill crests, the children would sing back to him one of his first children's tunes, "Good Morning, How are you?" It was there that Bruce began the educational music project that would eventually be called, 'K is for Kids'.

Bruce began writing in earnest for 'K is for Kids' when he was a counselor at a Detroit public school in 2000. He continued writing songs in English until a teacher with a bilingual class asked him to write an alphabet song in Spanish. He gave it a whirl and 'A-Avion' was created. From there, more songs were written in Spanish and some traditional songs (in both languages) were made part of the mix. 'K is for Kids' was recorded in the JBL Productions studio at 1229 Hubbard in Detroit in 2005. But it was years in the making and perfecting.

He recently received an email from a friend, and mother of two, write to say, "It's time for the next child to hear 'K is for Kids'." At 19 months! It's just that good! And one more thing, that mother said her eldest child now listened to the math songs because they were just what she was learning in school.

This CD is a gem. But that's just the opinion of hundreds of children who have heard Bruce Liles play gig after gig...as a volunteer, substitute teacher, and counselor. Go and listen to 30 seconds of any or all of the songs on this CD.

Oh, wait, Parents! Attention!
If you are looking for repetitive, simplistic melodies, that make you crazy after a dozen times played, then you need a different CD. Any good CD will be played hundreds of times by a child who has fun learning and there is no doubt that 'K is for Kids' is that kind of CD! But it is so 'listen-to-able' for adults, that it will keep parents from secretly hiding or mysteriously losing their beloved child's CD!
