Brookshire Brothers

Description

The close of World War I spawned the beginnings of Brookshire Brothers. Today, Brookshire is the most widely recognized supermarket in East Texas. On September 21, 1921, after being discharged from the services, two brothers, Austin and Tom Brookshire, pooled their money together and purchased a grocery store on the courthouse square in Lufkin. The store opened with the philosophy of Cash & Carry, the first of its kind in Angelina County. This allowed the store to have the lowest prices on groceries and soon it became the area’s largest store.

Family participation increased and new stores continued to open throughout East Texas. In 1928, the family, consisting of cousins and a few family friends, decided to form a common group and work toward a common goal. Thus, the company, Brookshire Brothers, became a business reality and operated as a partnership until 1962.

The business continued to prosper through the years and soon grew to 33 stores. It was decided that a general office and warehouse was needed to meet the needs of administration, accounting, and buying. In 1952, the Company purchased a local grocery and produce operation on the North side of the courthouse square in Lufkin. With this purchase, the Company entered the wholesale business and began self-distribution and wholesaling to other stores.
