About Waldoboro
Waldoboro is situated on the banks of the Medomak River which flows into the headwaters of Broad Bay. Waldoboro is named for General Samuel Waldo, who was born in England, of German descent.
In the early 1700's, Waldo came to America and became a prosperous, wealthy man in the Massachusetts Bay Colony. He acquired a land grant known as the Muscongus Patent, comprising much of the land which is now Waldoboro.
In the 19th Century, Waldoboro become a busy shipbuilding community and the river at one time, was lined with 22 shipyards. In 1888, the first five masted schooner on the east coast was built and launched in Waldoboro. The town is still home to substantial industries and businesses including Osram, New England 800, the Maine Antique Digest, Borealis Breads and Morse's Sauerkraut.
