About The Brazos Star

This old building has seen a lot of folks come and go during its lifetime. The owner, Mary Louise Young, purchased the building in 1969 from Johnny Malinowski. She has dated the building back to 1860 when the first beer license was issued in Chappell Hill, but we know the building dates back to even earlier times. It's on the National Register of Historic Buildings.

"During my years I’ve been through a lot and seen things you folks just wouldn’t believe! Why, I’ve been a saloon, general store, stable, doctor’s office, barber shop, cafe, gambling hall, and dance hall! I’ve had people like General Sam Houston step through my beautiful cypress doors. He used to stay at the Stagecoach Inn up the street. There've been lots of shoot-outs here years back, but the only scar I have seems to be the bullet in the wall. Wonder if Wild Bill Longley left that bullet? They say he was seen around these parts."

When you're in Chappell Hill enjoying the countryside and the beautiful wildflowers, taste some homemade sausage and great cheese available in the area. Be sure to visit the other historic homes and sites in the area - the Chappell Hill Museum, The Masonic Cemetery, Lesser & Son General Store, The Texas Cigar Emporium, The Bluebonnet House and The Rock Store. If you're planning a Christmas party, check into renting The Rock Store during our "Country Christmas." See Santa Claus come to town on the old fire truck, watch The Teddy Bear Parade, and sing carols with us. And, be sure to visit THE BRAZOS STAR and see our Christmas room filled with wonderful gifts.
