Books Not Bars
Description
Books Not Bars (BNB) is fighting to redirect California's resources away from youth incarceration and towards youth opportunities. We engage in grassroots advocacy campaigns using media advocacy, policy advocacy, grassroots organizing, and alliance building.
Families for Books Not Bars is the first-ever statewide network for families of incarcerated youth. We organize parents, grandparents, siblings, and relatives whose children are caught in the juvenile justice system. Our members have seen their children get abused and neglected by a system that is supposed to provide guidance and help. We've learned that the system not only harms the children, it also traumatizes the families. Our members have fought for their children's rights and have joined with Books Not Bars to fight for all of California's youth.
Let's Get Free is Books Not Bars' youth leadership development and organizing project in Oakland, California. After years of standout work as an independent project, LGF linked with Books Not Bars in 2004 to anchor our work in the Bay Area. Everyday, our youth members see money poured into police and prisons while schools and services for youth wither on the vine. Let's Get Free fights for a future where young people are lifted up instead of locked down.
