ext door to the east in Tarrant County, Ft. Worth bills itself as "Where the West Begins." That may be true, but Parker County is where it looks like the West begins! From the gently rolling, virtually treeless prairie of the former Walsh Ranch at the eastern edge, to the scenic, butte-like hills covered with cacti, mesquite and oak at the far west, you can observe a remarkable change in landscape. Parker County manages to encompass in its 40-some-mile expanse a remarkable variation of flora, fauna and terrain. The eastern portion of the county is described as Grand Prairie, and melds into the Cross Timbers terrain of the western portion. The change is quite perceptible as one travels across the county on Interstate 20, although the Highway 180 (Mineral Wells Highway) drive from Weatherford to Mineral Wells offers the most spectacular views of the transition.
As a newcomer to Parker County from Dallas (sixty miles east), I wasn't sure that I was going to like this place. The portion of the county I first settled in was rather nondescript and seemed to grow more mesquite than anything else. Weatherford, the nearest town, was a tiny place (compared to Dallas, at least) of some 30,000 souls. But within a few months of my arrival, with camera in hand, Parker County completely won me over and I found this land engagingly pastoral in some areas, ruggedly untamed in others, and inhabited by people who were fascinating to visit with and still in touch with a living history that's as surprising as the landscape.
Parker County was considered frontier up until the 1870's, even though the area saw its first white settlers in the late 1840's. The place was the scene of continual skirmishing
